NHAI Takes Proactive Steps for Effective Monsoon Management on National Highways

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has announced several proactive measures taken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure effective monsoon management on national highways. These steps are designed to address water logging and provide emergency response during the monsoon season, ensuring the safety and smooth movement of traffic across the country.

Coordination and Inspections

NHAI is working closely with state administrations and local authorities to inspect national highway stretches. These joint inspections are particularly focused on ensuring that the flow of any running channels or streams is not hindered by newly constructed highways. Recent efforts include special drives conducted on the Delhi-Katra Expressway and other projects in consultation with state irrigation departments.

Emergency Response Teams

In hilly regions, NHAI has mobilized dedicated Emergency Response Teams equipped with sufficient manpower and machinery at each landslide-prone site. These teams work in close coordination with district administrations to promptly clear debris from highways, ensuring 24×7 connectivity. Temporary barriers and warning signs have also been installed at these sites to facilitate safe traffic movement.

Advanced Traffic Management

To prevent water logging on highways, NHAI is making adequate pumping arrangements in urban areas where such risks are higher. Additionally, the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and the RajmaargYatra app are being utilized to disseminate real-time information to highway users about any potential hindrances along their route.

Preventive Measures and Inspections

NHAI is identifying vulnerable locations prone to floods, landslides, rock falls, and sinking zones. Officials are inspecting structures with a history of flooding to assess and address any damage to bridges’ abutments and piers. Warning signs are being installed at these vulnerable locations to caution road users. For areas where landslides could block traffic, alternative diversion plans have been developed in collaboration with district administrations.

Technological Integration

Geotechnical instrumentation, including real-time monitoring at selected vulnerable slopes and tunnels, is being implemented as a pilot project. This technological integration aims to enhance the monitoring and response capabilities of NHAI during the monsoon season.

Conclusion

With the advancement of the monsoon across India, NHAI’s comprehensive measures aim to ensure flood preparedness and provide effective emergency response on national highways. These initiatives will significantly contribute to a seamless and safe travel experience for highway users during the monsoon season.
