OYO Revises Check-In Policy, Unmarried Couples Barred, Starting From This City
In a significant policy shift, travel booking giant OYO has introduced a new check-in policy for its partner hotels, starting in Meerut. Effective this year, unmarried couples will no longer be permitted to check into OYO partner hotels in the city.
Under the revised guidelines, couples will be required to present valid proof of relationship during check-in, regardless of whether the booking was made online or in person. The company has empowered its partner hotels with the discretion to decline bookings from unmarried couples based on their judgment, citing alignment with local social sensibilities.
OYO confirmed that the directive has been enforced with immediate effect in Meerut and could potentially extend to other cities based on feedback received. Sources familiar with the decision revealed that the policy change stemmed from consistent feedback from civil society groups, especially in Meerut, urging action on the matter. Residents from other cities have also petitioned for a similar restriction on unmarried couple bookings at OYO properties.
Pawas Sharma, Region Head for OYO North India, stated, “OYO remains committed to safe and responsible hospitality practices. While respecting individual freedoms, we must also work with law enforcement and local civil society groups to ensure community standards are maintained in the micro-markets where we operate. The policy will be periodically reviewed for its impact and effectiveness.”
The initiative is part of OYO’s broader strategy to reposition its brand as a trusted choice for families, students, business travelers, religious pilgrims, and solo tourists. The policy aims to enhance guest trust and encourage longer stays and repeat bookings.
OYO has also launched nationwide initiatives to promote safe hospitality practices, including collaborative seminars with police and hotel partners, blacklisting properties reportedly linked to unethical activities, and taking action against unauthorized properties using the OYO brand.
