Transforming Tragedy into Purpose: Pooja Sharma Performs Last Rites for Abandoned Bodies, 4000 Till Now and Counting

In a heartwarming tale of resilience and compassion, 26-year-old Pooja Sharma from Shahdara, Delhi, has dedicated herself to performing the last rites for unclaimed bodies. Motivated by a personal tragedy, Pooja turned her grief into a mission to provide dignity to those forgotten in death.

Her journey began on March 13, 2022, when her 30-year-old brother was tragically murdered, having been shot after a trivial argument in front of her eyes. The shock of the incident pushed her father into a coma, leaving the family shattered. In the absence of any male member from the family and no help from anyone, she herself carried out her brother’s funeral.

Just two days after her brother’s funeral, Pooja resolved to help others facing similar abandonment. She even faced criticism from people saying she was doing something that girls usually don’t. However nothing has been able to deter Pooja from carrying out her mission after she lost her brother.

The video below depicts Pooja’s story – viewer discretion is advised.

Over the last two years, Pooja has performed the last rites for around 4,000 unclaimed bodies, often receiving calls from police and hospitals about those with no family to care for them. Remarkably, she funds these rituals, costing ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 each, using her grandfather’s pension while living modestly with her family.

Pooja’s unwavering commitment has turned a personal loss into a beacon of hope for countless souls, showcasing extraordinary strength and empathy.
