The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a strict ultimatum to construction contractors and Ready Mix Cement (RMC) plant operators to enforce dust control measures within eight days or face severe penalties. This action comes as Pune witnesses a significant rise in air pollution levels, particularly due to elevated PM 2.5 particulate matter.

Construction Hotspots Under Scrutiny

Large-scale construction and redevelopment activities in areas such as Kothrud, Baner, Balewadi, Karvenagar, and Yerawada have been identified as primary contributors to deteriorating air quality. The dust generated by these projects has caused discomfort for residents and commuters alike. To combat this issue, PMC has reinforced compliance with established guidelines, which include:

  • Installing 25-foot-high barriers around construction sites.
  • Covering active construction areas with green nets and frequent water spraying.
  • Water spraying on roads during peak hours to reduce airborne dust.
  • Transporting debris in covered vehicles to prevent spillage.

RMC Plants Targeted for Compliance

RMC plants have also been highlighted as significant contributors to air pollution, especially those located near rivers and busy roads. PMC’s city engineer, Prashant Waghmare, has mandated strict monitoring of these plants. Notices will be issued to operators violating pollution control norms, with an emphasis on ensuring that roads near construction sites and cement transport routes are regularly cleaned and kept dust-free.

Stricter Enforcement Promised

Despite similar measures being introduced last year, compliance was often limited to inspection periods. This time, PMC has vowed stringent and sustained checks to ensure long-term adherence to pollution control measures. The initiative aims to address rising dust levels, providing relief to residents concerned about the health impact of deteriorating air quality.
