Pune Airport Conducts Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Walk to Enhance Aircraft Safety; Know What is FOD
As part of Aviation Safety Awareness Week 2024, Pune Airport organized a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Walk to underscore the importance of maintaining airside safety.
Led by the Airport Director, the initiative included participants from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) team and airline representatives.
The team conducted a detailed inspection of operational areas and their surroundings, identifying and removing potential hazards such as broken pavement, trash, and luggage parts. This proactive approach reinforces Pune Airport’s commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards, aligning with its broader Airside Safety Program, which includes training, facility inspections, and regular maintenance.
What is FOD?
Foreign Object Debris (FOD) refers to any object found in an inappropriate location that poses a risk of damage to aircraft or injury to personnel. FOD includes materials like trash, metal fragments, misplaced tools, or even wildlife.
FOD can have severe consequences in aviation. It may cause:
- Aircraft Engine Damage: FOD ingestion into engines can lead to significant mechanical failures.
- Tire Punctures: Sharp objects can damage landing gear, posing safety risks during takeoff or landing.
- Operational Delays: Removing FOD or repairing damage caused by it disrupts schedules and incurs costs.
The aviation industry estimates FOD-related damage costs over $4 billion annually. FOD Walks, like the one conducted at Pune Airport, are crucial in mitigating these risks. Participants are often equipped with gloves, hand grabs, and collection bags to remove hazards efficiently. Such walks are conducted regularly, particularly before peak operational seasons, as part of comprehensive safety measures.
By actively addressing the dangers of FOD, Pune Airport continues to lead by example in its mission to provide safe and reliable air travel.
