Pune Airport: Faster Check-Ins and Reduced Wait Times as New Baggage Screening Machines Enhance Efficiency by 70%
Pune International Airport has significantly reduced luggage screening time with the installation of two inline baggage systems in the basement of its New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB). The systems can process between 1,200 to 1,400 bags per hour, enhancing passenger convenience during check-in and pre-boarding, especially for registered baggage headed to the aircraft cargo.
Airport Director Santosh Dhoke highlighted that the processing time for screened luggage has dropped from approximately 30 minutes to just 10 minutes—a reduction of 70%. The improvement complies with International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines, aligning Pune Airport with major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai that already use fully equipped inline baggage systems.
Two types of baggage screening machines are in use at Pune Airport: one for checked-in luggage destined for the cargo hold and the other for carry-on bags. While these advanced inline systems operate behind the scenes, the 10 X-ray machines operated by CISF personnel at security checkpoints handle approximately 135 bags per hour each, allowing a total capacity of about 1,350 bags per hour.
With this technological upgrade, Pune Airport now manages a peak passenger flow of up to 1,200 individuals during rush hours, marking a significant boost in operational efficiency and passenger movement.
