Pune, December 3, 2024 – Cab drivers operating at Pune Airport’s Aeromall have announced a strike from December 11 to December 24, protesting against the operations of online ride-hailing companies like Ola and Uber. The drivers claim that these companies are running illegal operations at the Aeromall, despite the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) revoking their licenses.

The drivers allege that Ola and Uber are collecting fares from passengers at half the rate charged by the authorised cab service, Avva, which holds a contract with the Airport Authority of India (AAI). This practice, they argue, is damaging their livelihoods, as the online companies offer significantly lower fares while still making substantial profits without compensating their drivers appropriately.

According to the protesting cab drivers, this system has led to a financial imbalance, with both passengers and drivers being exploited. While passengers are paying less, drivers working for Ola and Uber are receiving less than the government-approved rates for their services, contributing to widespread dissatisfaction.

Despite repeated complaints to Pune Airport Authority Director Dhoke and Aeromall Vice President Rajput, the drivers claim no action has been taken to address their grievances. As a result, the drivers have decided to take collective action by going on strike.

The protesting drivers have also issued statements to the Pune Airport Authority and the Senior Police Inspector of the Airport Police Station, seeking resolution of the issues.

The strike is expected to disrupt airport transport services, and passengers are advised to make alternate travel arrangements during the period of the strike.

Key Issues Raised by Drivers:

  • Illegal operations by Ola and Uber at Pune Airport’s Aeromall.
  • Unauthorised fare collection at rates lower than the official Avva service.
  • Drivers not receiving appropriate, government-approved remuneration.
  • Lack of response from airport authorities and police to address the concerns.
