Pune Cylinder Blast: Two Explosions Rock Government Colony House
In a concerning incident on Friday afternoon, two gas cylinders exploded in a house located in a government colony in Yerwada, Pune. The explosions took place around 1 PM, causing a significant stir among local residents. Fortunately, there were no casualties, as the house was empty at the time.
The explosion occurred at the Yerwada Intermediate Administrative Building No.2, an area that has been a government colony for over fifty years. The site has ongoing construction work for two buildings, and on the day of the incident, a Bhoomi Pujan ceremony for the project was expected to be attended by prominent political figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Mumtaz Ibrahim Sheikh, a 57-year-old resident, lives alone in the affected house. She had left her home at around 12 PM that day to visit the market, leaving the house vacant when the explosions occurred. According to reports, the fire broke out following the first cylinder’s explosion, which caught the attention of nearby security guards. As the fire escalated, a second cylinder exploded, intensifying the situation.
The Yerwada fire brigade quickly arrived at the scene and managed to extinguish the flames, preventing further damage. Thankfully, no one was in the vicinity, and the nearby area was also clear, avoiding a major disaster. Mumtaz Sheikh’s belongings and personal items in the house, which are now being described as “worldly useful literature,” suffered extensive damage.
This incident has raised concerns over safety in areas under construction, especially in residential colonies. It also highlights the need for strict adherence to safety protocols around gas cylinders and construction sites to prevent such accidents in the future.
