Pune: Drunk Dumper Driver Kills Three, Injures Nine in Wagholi Tragedy
Pune, December 23, 2024: In a heartbreaking incident in Pune’s Wagholi area near Kesnand Phata, a drunk dumper driver caused a devastating accident at around 12:30 am on Sunday night. The speeding dumper veered off the road, plowing into a group of 12 laborers sleeping on the footpath. Three people, including two toddlers, lost their lives on the spot, while nine others sustained injuries.
The deceased have been identified as Vaibhavi Ritesh Pawar (1 year old), Vaibhav Ritesh Pawar (2 years old), and Rinesh Nitesh Pawar (30 years old). Among the injured, three are in critical condition, and all are being treated at Sassoon Hospital. The victims, laborers from Amravati, had arrived in Pune just the night before in search of work and were sleeping outdoors due to lack of shelter.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and deeply distressing. The dumper driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, lost control of the vehicle, resulting in this tragic event. The local police have launched an investigation into the incident.
This accident has sparked outrage and brought attention to the increasing frequency of hit-and-run cases in Maharashtra. It underscores the dangers of drunk driving and the precarious living conditions of laborers who are forced to sleep on pavements.
