Pune: Forest Areas on City Hills Out of Bounds for Visitors on New Year’s Eve
Pune, December 31, 2024: In a precautionary move to protect wildlife and prevent potential hazards, Pune’s forest department has declared forest areas on city hills off-limits to visitors from 4 PM on December 31 until 6 AM on January 1.
This decision follows reports of New Year revelers indulging in activities like loud music, alcohol consumption, smoking, and bonfires, all of which are detrimental to wildlife and pose risks of forest fires.
Deepak Pawar, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Pune forest department, stated, “We have appointed guards with vehicle facilities for patrolling on the hills. Violators will face action, including a penalty of ₹25,000 and up to one year of imprisonment.”
Additionally, popular tourist destinations such as Tiger Point and Lion Point in Lonavla will also remain closed during the same timeframe to avoid overcrowding and potential mishaps. The department has increased patrolling in Maval’s forest areas and forts to ensure compliance.
This temporary restriction aims to ensure a safe environment for wildlife and prevent accidents during the year-end celebrations.
