Pune: Forest Department Bans Monsoon Tourism in Tamhini Ghat Sanctuary
Pune: Important news for tourists! The Pune Forest Department has announced a ban on monsoon tourism in Tamhini Sanctuary following the tragic deaths of two tourists. The ban will remain in effect until September 30, 2024.
Due to increased rainfall, Tamhini Ghat, a popular spot for monsoon tourism, has become hazardous. The Pune Forest Department, led by Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Tushar Chavan, has implemented this ban as a precautionary measure to prevent further accidents. The ghat sees a significant influx of tourists, especially on weekends, who come to enjoy the scenic beauty and pleasant weather.
Plus Valley, within the Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary, is particularly treacherous due to slippery roads caused by the rain. Recently, two tourists lost their lives in the area, prompting the wildlife department to take action. One fatality occurred in the first week of June at Milky Bar falls, followed by another on June 27.
Chavan highlighted the dangers of the area, noting that the depth of natural pools increases during the monsoon, making them life-threatening. He emphasized that those caught entering the forest area through the trail will face legal action under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972. Additionally, the Nisargawata area has been closed from June 28, 2024, to June 30, 2024, to ensure public safety.
Tourists are urged to adhere strictly to the rules set by the forest department to avoid punitive measures. The department is committed to ensuring the safety of all visitors and preventing further tragic incidents.
