The Pune Forest Division recently marked the first anniversary of its trailblazing Grassland Safari, an eco-tourism initiative that has set a benchmark for conservation and community development in Maharashtra. Launched in October 2023, the safari operates in the grasslands of Kadbanwadi (Indapur tehsil) and Shirsufal (Baramati tehsil) in Pune district. Over the past year, it has successfully combined wildlife conservation, biodiversity awareness, and livelihood support for local communities.

In its inaugural year, the Grassland Safari has achieved several milestones:

  • Safaris Conducted: 3,044 tours, offering an immersive experience of Pune’s unique grassland ecosystem.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Visitors witnessed species like wolves, hyenas, Chinkara (Indian gazelles), Indian foxes, grassland birds, and reptiles, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the region.
  • Economic Impact:
    • ₹15.22 lakh earned by trained local guides.
    • ₹19.55 lakh revenue generated by the Forest Department.
    • Total revenue: ₹34.77 lakh, with Kadbanwadi alone contributing 75% of the income.
  • Community Benefits: Around 30 local families benefitted directly and indirectly, establishing a robust model of eco-tourism.

Voices Behind the Initiative

N R Praveen, Chief Conservator of Forests, Pune, emphasized the project’s dual impact on conservation and livelihoods, stating:
“The Grassland Safari is a remarkable example of how conservation and livelihood generation can go hand in hand. The enthusiasm from visitors and the support from villagers reaffirm our belief in eco-tourism’s potential.”

Mahadeo Mohite, Deputy Conservator of Forests, added:
“This initiative is a milestone in conserving grasslands and engaging local communities. We look forward to enhancing the safari experience in the coming years.”

Empowering Local Communities

The initiative trained residents from Kadbanwadi and Shirsufal as nature guides, equipping them with skills that provided sustainable employment. Additionally, the safari indirectly supported businesses and families in the area, fostering goodwill and stability in these rural communities.

A Model for Eco-Tourism

By promoting grassland conservation and offering an engaging wildlife experience, the Grassland Safari has become a replicable model for sustainable eco-tourism. It underscores the ecological importance of grasslands, often overshadowed by forests, and their role in supporting diverse flora and fauna.

Looking Ahead

The overwhelming response from visitors has inspired the Pune Forest Division to further enhance the initiative. With plans to expand and innovate, the department aims to inspire similar projects across Maharashtra, making conservation a shared responsibility and a celebration of nature.
