Pune: Laxmi Road to Remain Closed to Vehicular Traffic on December 11 as PMC Celebrates Pedestrian Day
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will celebrate the 5th annual Pedestrian Day today, Wednesday, December 11, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. As part of the event, Laxmi Road—stretching from Kunte Chowk to Garud Ganpati Chowk—will be transformed into a vehicle-free zone for the day.
This initiative aims to raise awareness about pedestrian safety and promote inclusivity, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens, women, and specially-abled individuals. The PMC, in collaboration with the Pune Traffic Police, Laxmi Road Traders’ Association, and pedestrian advocacy groups, has organized a range of engaging activities and workshops.

- Sensitivity and Accessibility Workshop for specially-abled individuals by Ekansh Trust.
- Art Exhibition by Pune Municipal School students.

- Happy Street by the Times of India Group.
- A grand rangoli competition by Rang Kala Academy.

- Air quality testing by PMC’s Environment Department.
- Exhibitions on urban cleanliness by Swachh.
Transportation Support:
To encourage participation, PMC has arranged:
- Special bicycle stations at Kasba and Mandai Metro Stations.
- Increased PMPML bus services.
Citizens are encouraged to walk to the venue or use alternate routes to avoid congestion.
Pedestrian-Friendly Features:
The PMC’s Road Department is focusing on safer footpaths, visible zebra crossings, refuge islands, and well-lit streets to enhance pedestrian rights and safety throughout Pune.
