Pune, September 27, 2024: The Maharashtra government has taken the first step towards renaming Pune International Airport as ‘Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Pune International Airport’.

While presenting the proposal, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had discussions with various stakeholders, who supported the idea.

The decision reflects the deep connection between Lohegaon, the location of the airport, and Sant Tukaram Maharaj, whose maternal home is in Lohegaon. Sant Tukaram’s early life was spent in the village, creating a lasting bond with the area. Additionally, his significant contributions to the Varkari Sampraday and the promotion of Bhagwat Dharma made this renaming an appropriate and well-received decision.

The approved proposal will now be sent to the central government, and the Union Cabinet is expected to make a final decision soon. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation, Murlidhar Mohol, expressed confidence that the process will be completed swiftly.
