Pune: Massive Protests Erupt in Purandar Over Proposed Airport Land Acquisition
Villagers in Purandar have staged a massive protest against the proposed Pune International Airport project, raising concerns over land acquisition, insufficient compensation for farmers, and potential environmental damage. The demonstration, held outside the Saswad Panchayat Samiti office last week, saw residents carrying black flags and placards as they voiced their opposition.
The project, announced in 2016, aims to boost economic growth and create jobs in the region. However, locals argue it will disrupt their livelihoods and destroy the ecological balance. Farmers and residents from affected villages like Pargaon, Udachi Wadi, Gunjawadi, Ekhatpur, Khanwadi, Kumbharwal, and Vanpuri are particularly alarmed. The villages collectively face land acquisition spanning thousands of acres, with Pargaon and Vanpuri experiencing the largest impacts.
Residents have expressed concerns over the destruction of agricultural lands and orchards, which are primary sources of income for the community. Key grievances include a lack of transparency in the decision-making process, unfair compensation rates, and the absence of a clear rehabilitation plan for displaced families.
Protesters claim that despite nearly a decade of marches, roadblocks, and meetings with officials, their concerns remain unaddressed. Allegations of delays, irregularities, and non-adherence to the 2013 Land Acquisition Act have further fueled anger. Locals have also accused political leaders and brokers of facilitating land sales to external investors at undervalued prices, deepening mistrust.
While government officials have assured the airport will be operational by 2029 with advanced infrastructure, villagers remain skeptical. They have vowed to escalate protests if their demands for fairness and clarity continue to be ignored.
