Pune Municipal Corporation to Auction 42 Properties Over ₹11 Crores in Tax Dues
In an effort to recover outstanding property tax dues, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced an online auction of 42 seized properties on 10th December.
These properties, comprising residential and commercial units, were confiscated from owners who failed to clear dues totaling ₹11.11 crores. With an estimated market value of ₹58 crores, the auction aims to make significant headway in addressing Pune’s massive property tax arrears, which exceed ₹10,000 crores.
Madhav Jagtap, head of PMC’s property tax department, stated, “We followed all procedures to facilitate the defaulters to pay property tax dues. However, following no positive response, we have seized their properties to be auctioned.”
Despite consistent efforts, including repeated notices and seizure drives targeting defaulting properties, the PMC has faced challenges in recovering dues. Annually, between 1,800 and 2,000 properties are confiscated, primarily commercial establishments. Last year’s auction of 56 properties had a limited success rate, recovering just ₹4 crores.
This year, the PMC is intensifying its drive, ensuring that all properties in the auction are free from legal disputes. Proceeds from the auction will first be used to clear pending tax dues, with the remainder returned to the respective defaulters.
This initiative reflects the PMC’s strategic approach to tackling a financial shortfall and highlights the necessity of timely compliance with civic obligations by property owners.
