Pune: Pimpri-Chinchwad Housing Society Federation Demands Action Against Illegal Scrap Businesses
Pune: The Chikhali-Moshi-Charholi-Pimpri-Chinchwad Housing Society Federation has raised serious concerns about approximately 5,000 illegal scrap shops and warehouses operating in the Kudalwadi area.
These establishments are accused of causing significant air and water pollution, alongside posing severe safety risks to residents.
In a memorandum submitted to PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh, the federation warned of protests if no action is taken within a month. According to their report, the illegal businesses engage in harmful activities such as metal shredding and burning plastic, leading to high levels of air pollution and contamination of nearby riverbanks. Over the past year alone, the area has experienced 40 fire incidents, further highlighting the hazards.
Residents have expressed frustration over the inaction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) despite repeated complaints. Federation President Sanjeevan Sangle has called for urgent measures, including regulatory interventions, to mitigate the risks.
The issue has also garnered political attention. Member of Parliament Dr. Amol Kolhe from the Shirur Lok Sabha Constituency has demanded an impartial investigation, emphasizing the need for a politically unbiased inquiry. Dr. Kolhe has recommended proactive steps such as setting up fire stations, conducting safety audits, implementing robust waste management systems, and providing training to reduce risks in the future.
The federation’s ultimatum and the involvement of political leaders have heightened pressure on municipal authorities to address these grievances promptly.
