Pune: PMC Conducts Stringent Inspections at Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Private Clinics to Ensure Compliance to Healthcare Standards
Pune Municipal Corporation has launched an intensive inspection campaign targeting hospitals and healthcare facilities across the city, Under directives from the state health authorities. The objective of this initiative is to evaluate service quality, ensure uninterrupted patient care, verify adherence to the Patient Rights Charter, confirm the display of tariff lists and toll-free helplines, and identify any irregularities. Notices have already been issued to six hospitals found in violation of compliance standards.
Recent reports have highlighted instances of unauthorized medical treatments and the submission of fraudulent patient records to exploit benefits under the municipal urban poor scheme. In response, the PMC has intensified its inspection efforts to curb such malpractices.
All hospitals, nursing homes, and private clinics within municipal limits are required to register with the corporation as per the provisions of the Bombay Nursing Home Act, 1949. To reinforce compliance, a special month-long inspection drive has been initiated, scrutinizing hospitals in line with the Maharashtra Nursing Home Registration Rules, 2021. These biannual inspections are conducted based on a standardized checklist by medical teams from PMC’s zonal offices.
With over 850 hospitals and 4,000 outpatient clinics operating in Pune, the health department is undertaking rigorous evaluations to detect lapses or regulatory violations. Stringent action will be taken against healthcare facilities found guilty of negligence. Inspections also encompass checks on fire safety systems and verification of patient record maintenance as per prescribed Sample D guidelines.
Regional medical officers at zonal offices have been tasked with conducting these inspections, and any discrepancies identified will be formally communicated to the concerned establishments. As per orders from the Deputy Director of Health Services, Pune Division, unregistered facilities discovered during the campaign will face strict enforcement measures.
Hospitals failing to address non-compliance issues after receiving notices will be subject to penalties under the Bombay Nursing Home Act. PMC remains committed to ensuring that all healthcare institutions operate within the prescribed regulatory framework, prioritizing patient welfare and safety.
