Pune: PMRDA Launches Major Anti-Encroachment Drive in Hinjawadi’s Laxmi Chowk, Removes 50 Illegal Structures
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) conducted a significant anti-encroachment drive on Friday, January 17, at Laxmi Chowk in Hinjawadi, Pimpri Chinchwad. The operation targeted illegal tin sheds, brick constructions, and retaining walls that contributed to traffic congestion in the bustling IT hub.
In total, over 50 unauthorized structures were demolished by the PMRDA’s Illegal Constructions and Evictions Department. Additionally, approximately 50 property owners voluntarily dismantled their encroachments after warnings from PMRDA. The drive was initiated following complaints from industrialists and IT firms in Hinjawadi IT Park about frequent traffic jams in the area.
PMRDA Public Relations Officer Dr. Dnyaneshwar Bhale stated, “We are taking different steps to reduce traffic congestion in PMRDA limits. Citizens are advised to remove encroachments on their own to avoid further action.”
The large-scale operation was carried out under the leadership of PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, along with Superintendent of Police and Vigilance Officer Amol Tambe, and Acting Joint Commissioner of Illegal Construction and Evictions Department, Dr. Deepti Suryawanshi-Patil. They were supported by Deputy Collector Pramod Kudale, Tehsildars Sachin Maske and Rajendra Ranjane, Police Inspector Maheshkumar Sartape, junior engineers, and law enforcement personnel.

Cooperation from Residents
The drive not only involved demolition but also saw significant voluntary participation. Residents removed encroachments themselves, aligning with PMRDA’s efforts to streamline traffic in Hinjawadi. This marks one of the most extensive eviction operations since the Navale Bridge action.
Ongoing Surveys and Future Actions
PMRDA has clarified that surveys of unauthorized constructions, hoardings, and other obstructions are ongoing across its jurisdiction. Further measures will be taken to maintain smooth traffic flow and curb illegal developments.
