Pune: Renaming of Pune Airport to Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport Approved
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has unanimously approved the resolution to rename Pune International Airport as “Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport.” This significant move honors the revered 17th-century saint and poet, Saint Tukaram, renowned for his devotion to Lord Vitthal and contributions to the Bhakti movement.
Pune MP and Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Muralidhar Mohol, played a pivotal role in this achievement. Expressing his gratitude on Twitter, Mohol thanked Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Ajit Pawar, and Shri Eknath Shinde for their support. He stated, “Success in the follow-up; another step towards renaming Pune International Airport!”
The renaming is a tribute to Saint Tukaram’s teachings and cultural legacy. The Legislative Assembly’s decision will now move to the Civil Aviation Ministry for final approval.
Meanwhile, Pune International Airport continues to modernize its facilities. Two state-of-the-art inline baggage screening systems have been installed in the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB), significantly enhancing pre-boarding security processes by handling up to 1,400 bags per hour. These developments reflect Pune’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing modern infrastructure.
This renaming is a milestone in Pune’s journey, combining its rich spiritual traditions with its aspirations for global connectivity.
