The MIDC has cleared a proposal for a dedicated waste management depot at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi and issued work orders recently.

A senior official of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) said the plant will have a capacity to process 10 tons of waste daily and would be set up within the IT hub.

The IT Park hosts over 150 companies, including several MNCs, and over four lakh people are employed there. Besides IT companies, there are many integrated townships, home to a large number of residents.

The official told media persons, “A plot in phase III has been identified for the plant. A letter seeking allocation of land for the purpose has been forwarded to MIDC headquarters. The building activity will begin once the allocation process is through. It will take around one year to complete the project.”

Industries have been highlighting the issue of illegal dumping of garbage inside the IT park. MIDC officials and members of the Hinjawadi Industries Association (HIA) held multiple meetings with the district administration about the issue over the last few years. However, the problem remained unresolved. Though the IT Park is a part of the Hinjawadi gram panchayat, MIDC is responsible for management of infrastructure in the area.

At present, the MIDC has given contracts to three different private agencies to collect waste from the IT park area. The agencies hand over the collected waste to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for processing.
