Pune: Tomato Price Breaches ₹100/kg-Mark in Retail Markets as Supply Reduces

Pune: Tomato prices in the retail markets have crossed a threshold of ₹100 per kg for the first time in 2024 as intake has reduced drastically in the wholesale markets across the state, said the agriculture produce market committee (APMC) officials on Tuesday.

Experts from the APMC and traders said the shortage is also present in the markets outside Maharashtra. “As a result, the chances are unlikely to reduce the rates immediately,” said a senior APMC official.

The APMC officials noted that the high day temperatures affected tomato plantations severely in the state. “The intake has also reduced drastically in the Naryangaon wholesale market in the last 10 days. We are getting around 10,000 crates of tomatoes. Each crate contains 20kg of tomatoes. In May, we were getting over 30,000 crates daily,” said a senior official from the Naryangaon market.

At Nashik Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), the average wholesale price of tomatoes has increased by about 36% over the past week — from ₹550 per crate (20 kg a crate) on June 18 to ₹750 per crate on Tuesday (June 25).

In Nashik, tomatoes are now being sold between ₹80-100 per kg as compared to ₹60 per kg last week. In Kolhapur, tomatoes are being sold between ₹75 and ₹80 per kg, while in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar the price was ₹120/kg on Tuesday.
