Pune traffic police crackdown on vehicles with multiple unpaid fines
Pune traffic police have started a drive to impound vehicles with over 50 unpaid fines due to various road offenses. Already 44 such four-wheelers and two-wheelers have been impounded.
According to city police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, there are 21 vehicles with over 100 traffic challans pending, while 988 vehicles have 50-99 pending traffic challans against them.
“We have identified these vehicles and will catch the owners so that the pending fines are paid. If this is not done, we will impound the vehicles,” he said.
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil stated that the total fines pending across these vehicles amount to Rs 3.18 crore. “Our staff across various traffic divisions have the list of these vehicles. We are committed to enforcing payment and will proceed with impounding vehicles that do not comply,” Patil added.
In case of four-wheelers with tourist or commercial number plates, any vehicle with more than 50 unpaid fines will be targeted. If the fines remain unpaid, their transport permits will be cancelled in coordination with the RTO. Private vehicles with over 50 unpaid fines will face similar consequences, with the potential suspension of the owner’s driving license.
Patil also revealed that one two-wheeler currently holds the record for the highest number of unpaid traffic challans—154 in total, amounting to Rs 1.21 lakh in fines, which exceeds the vehicle’s cost. There are at least 35 such vehicles in the city with fines surpassing their value.
The traffic police department’s crackdown aims to address the growing concern of unpaid traffic fines and ensure greater compliance with road safety regulations.
