Pune, December 30, 2024: The Pune traffic police have taken strict action against 5,256 drunk drivers this year, marking the highest number of violations in the last five years. As the year-end approaches, the traffic police have ramped up enforcement with special night checks across more than 30 locations in the city.

This proactive campaign is aimed at ensuring public safety during celebrations like New Year’s Eve. The traffic department is employing disposable pipe breath analysers to detect drunk driving and penalize offenders.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zhende stated, “Citizens should not drive after drinking alcohol as it is both illegal and dangerous. As we welcome the New Year, we urge everyone to act responsibly and not endanger lives. Those found violating the law will face strict legal action.”

During the pandemic, the use of breath analysers was halted, resulting in fewer violations being recorded. However, the practice resumed in December 2023. The month of October 2024 saw the highest number of violations, with 1,433 drunk drivers penalized. Offenders are issued e-challans, and cases are referred to court for legal proceedings.

The Pune traffic police have also been instrumental in ensuring smooth operations during the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections held earlier this year. Alongside tackling drunk driving, they have focused on curbing other criminal activities to maintain law and order.

With the campaign in full swing, the traffic police are committed to making Pune’s roads safer for all citizens as the city prepares to usher in 2025.
