Pune, December 15: The long-awaited construction of a flyover and grade separator at Shastri Nagar Chowk on Nagar Road is set to kick off in January 2025, marking a major step towards alleviating persistent traffic congestion in the area. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has confirmed that preparations are underway, reported Sakal, with actual excavation expected to begin after receiving permission from the traffic police.

The project, which includes a flyover and a level separator, had faced delays due to its proximity to the Aga Khan Palace, a centrally protected monument. After a year of follow-ups, the Central Archaeological Department issued a ‘No Objection Certificate,’ clearing the path for the development.

Initially planned under the city’s development plan, the design was revised to account for increased traffic and changing road conditions. Preparatory tasks, including traffic surveys, soil testing, and General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) approvals, have already been initiated. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar inaugurated the project before the announcement of the assembly election model code of conduct.

The project, spanning a 60-meter-wide road, will see the construction of the level separator first, followed by the flyover. The estimated cost is Rs. 98 crore, with funds to be released in phases. A provision of Rs. 10 crore has been made in the 2024-25 municipal budget, with the proposal for phased funding approved by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale.

Abhijit Ambekar, Executive Engineer of the Special Projects Department, confirmed, “Soil testing is currently underway. Excavation for the level separator will begin next month after obtaining traffic police clearance.”

The initiative is expected to significantly ease congestion and streamline traffic flow along Nagar Road, providing much-needed relief to daily commuters.
