Raigad Fort Closed For Tourists Due to Heavy Rains in the Area

Raigad, 8th July 2024: Raigad Fort has been closed to tourists due to ongoing heavy rains in the Raigad district.

A severe cloudburst near Raigad Fort left 30 people stranded on the monument, with video of the horrific aftermath going viral on social media. The video showcases tourists trying to find their footing amidst heavy rainfall and intense water flow that was inundating the fort’s pathway.

The stranded tourists were visibly panicked, having to navigate the treacherous conditions on the main steps, which had turned into waterfalls. However, rescue operations ensured all stranded individuals were evacuated safely, with no casualties reported so far. After the incident, the fort has been closed for tourists. The closure, announced by the Raigad district superintendent of police, aims to prioritize visitor safety. Heavy rains can make the fort’s pathways slippery and increase the risk of landslides. Additionally, inclement weather can obscure the scenic views, diminishing the overall experience for tourists.

Police officials have placed barricades at the ‘Chitta Darwaja’ and ‘Nane Darwaja’, the entry points to the fort.

To ensure safety, the ropeway service to reach the fort has also been suspended temporarily.
