Revolutionary new eye drops that eliminate the need for reading glasses could hit the market by early October
Mumbai-based Entod Pharmaceuticals has launched “PresVu” eye drops, a prescription-based medicine designed for treating presbyopia, a common age-related vision condition that affects people over 40. These eye drops promise to eliminate the need for reading glasses and could hit the market as early as the first week of October 2024.
PresVu Eye Drops
PresVu Eye Drops are formulated with pilocarpine, a medication that treats presbyopia by reducing the size of the pupils, allowing people to have a clearer near vision. Presbyopia is a condition where the eyes slowly lose the ability to focus on nearby objects, beginning from the mid-40s and worsening until the late 60s.
Important Features of PresVu
Quick Action: A single drop of PresVu Eye Drops will start working within 15 minutes and the medicine will be effective for up to six hours. If the second drop is administered within 3-6 of the first drop, the effects can be extended even further.
Suitable Age Group: These eye drops are suitable for people in the age group of 40 to 55 years, offering a non invasive solution to blurry vision.
Cost: These eye drops are reported to cost Rs. 350 and will be available at medicine shops across India. However a prescription from a registered medical professional will be required to purchase them.
Development and Approval
India’s drug regulatory agency has approved PresVu after two years of rigerous evaluation and trails, making it the first of its kind eye drops in India. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) granted final approval following successful Phase III clinical trials conducted at ten sites across India, involving more than 250 patients.
Clinical Trials and Results
Efficacy: Out of the 274 subjects tested for these eye drops, 82% did not experience any side effects while the remaining reported minor temporary side effects such as eye irritation, redness, blurring of vision, and headaches. However these symptoms subsided within a few days and none of the patients had to be discontinued from the trials.
Post Launch Monitoring: Entod Pharmaceuticals plans to continue monitoring the effects of PresVu eye drops at several major eye-care centers across India, including AIIMS, New Delhi, to monitor the long-term efficacy and safety of the medication.
Specially Formulated for India
Nikkhil K Masurkar, CEO of Entod Pharmaceuticals said that PresVu eye drops have been specifically created for Indian eyes, which are different from Caucasian eyes in many genetic aspects. Similar products are available in other countries but this is the first such product to be launched in India.
A Promising Solution
Those who are suffering from presbyopia, a common age-related vision condition that affects people over 40, this could be game changer, eliminating the need for reading glasses, lenses or surgical interventions. Dr. Dhananjay Bakhle feels that the approval of PresVu is an important milestone in ophthalmology, providing patients with a non-invasive option to enhance near vision.
Many Indians will be eagerly waiting for the launch and availability of PresVu eye drops, as they promise to enhance quality of life, especially for people above 40. However, we will know the actual results and the practicality of the product only after it has been used for a while in the real-life scenario.
