Revolutionizing Long Distance Travel; Indian Railways to Launch 200 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains
Indian Railways is all set to launch 200 Vande Bharat sleeper trains to take long distance travel to new heights. This initiative follows the success of Vande Bharat chair car trains, which have been widely appreciated for their efficiency and passenger comfort. New sleeper trains will provide enhanced night travel experience to passengers on long and medium distance routes.
Simulation Tests Commenced
The first prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper train has been prepared by Bangalore-based BEML and submitted for simulation tests. Lucknow-based Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) is monitoring these tests. The tests will examine the performance of the train at speeds of 130 kmph and 180 kmph under various load conditions. This rake is of 16 coaches, comprising coaches from Class I to III. These are being extensively tested to ensure safety and stability.
Production in Full Swing
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has confirmed that the production of 10 trains under the scheme of 200 Vande Bharat sleeper trains is going on. The construction process is entrusted to technical partners, and its time frame depends on the test results. These sleeper trains promise fast and comfortable travel and are set to revolutionize Indian rail travel.

Upgradation of Railway Infrastructure
The expansion of Vande Bharat trains aims to improve rail connectivity in India. Currently, 136 chair car Vande Bharat trains are running on the country’s electrified broad gauge network, with an average occupancy rate of over 100 percent. Along with this, Indian Railways has also ramped up production of Link Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches. Between 2014 and 2024, 36,933 LHB coaches have been built, compared to just 2,337 in the previous decade.
Future Prospects
In line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with the active participation of Railway Minister Vaishnav, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project is likely to start commercial operations in the next few years. These developments represent a significant leap forward in India’s railway infrastructure, which will ensure faster, safer and more comfortable travel for passengers across the country.
