Severe Cold Wave in Maharashtra: Pune shivers at 7.8°C, NDA freezes at 6.1°C; similar conditions in other cities, no further drop expected – experts
The minimum temperature in Pune dropped significantly to 7.8°C, while the National Defence Academy (NDA) area recorded an even lower 6.1°C. Ahmednagar experienced the lowest temperature in Maharashtra at 6.4°C, while Santacruz in Mumbai recorded the highest maximum temperature at 35.4°C.
Other notable lows include Jalgaon at 7.9°C and Nagpur at 7°C, highlighting a significant cold wave across the state. Meanwhile, Mumbai saw a mild drop in night temperature, with Santacruz reporting a minimum of 16.3°C.
Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, stated that there will be no further drop in night temperatures across Maharashtra, including Pune. He attributed this to a low-pressure system forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal on December 16, which is likely to intensify and move west-northwestward through Tamil Nadu by December 17-18.
This system will bring a rise in moisture levels across southern Maharashtra from December 17. Consequently, Pune and southern Maharashtra are likely to experience partly cloudy skies on December 18-19, leading to a rise in night temperatures over the next 5-7 days.
