The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced a game-changing rule for prepaid mobile users, making it easier and more affordable to keep SIM cards active. Gone are the days when you had to recharge with a minimum amount, like Rs 199, every month to avoid deactivation. Now, all you need is a balance of Rs 20 in your account, and your SIM card can remain active, even if you don’t use it regularly.

What’s the Rs 20 Rule?

TRAI’s guideline aims to prevent the deactivation of SIM cards due to inactivity, ensuring that mobile users—especially those who rarely use their phones—can hold on to their numbers. Here’s how it works:

  1. 90-Day Inactivity Check: If you don’t use your SIM card (no calls, texts, data, or other services) for 90 days, it risks deactivation.
  2. Rs 20 Balance Deduction: If you have more than Rs 20 in your account after 90 days of inactivity, Rs 20 will be deducted automatically to keep your SIM active for another 30 days.
  3. Cycle of Deduction: This process will continue monthly as long as your balance is Rs 20 or more.
  4. Deactivation and Reactivation: If your balance drops below Rs 20, your SIM will be deactivated. However, you can reactivate it within 15 days by recharging with Rs 20.

Who Benefits From This Rule?

This update is a boon for users who rely on their phones infrequently, such as those who use secondary numbers or keep a SIM card for occasional calls. It also provides a budget-friendly option for prepaid users who want to avoid high monthly recharge costs.

Important Notes

  • This rule applies to prepaid connections only.
  • Ensure your balance doesn’t fall below Rs 20 to keep your SIM card active seamlessly.

TRAI’s Rs 20 rule is a welcome change, providing flexibility and affordability for prepaid mobile users. If you have a spare SIM card or use your phone sparingly, this simple guideline will save you from unnecessary monthly expenses while keeping your number active.
