Two New Scams Targeting People, Authorities Advice Caution | Here’s What You Need to Know
In a recent alert, authorities have cautioned the public against falling prey to fraudulent emails and messages impersonating official entities like the Income Tax Department and India Post. These scams are designed to trick individuals into sharing sensitive financial and personal information.
Fake e-PAN Card Email Scam
A widespread scam involves emails urging recipients to download their e-PAN cards. The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check team (#PIBFactCheck) has confirmed these emails are fake. Individuals are advised not to respond to such emails or share any confidential information.
Key Indicators of Phishing Emails
Phishing scams often appear legitimate, but here’s how to identify and protect yourself:
- Do not reply to unsolicited emails or messages.
- Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments in suspicious emails; they may contain malicious software.
- Beware of deceptive links, which may lead to fraudulent websites resembling official portals.
- Use updated security software, such as anti-virus and anti-spyware, along with a reliable firewall.
Reporting Fraudulent Emails
If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from the Income Tax Department:
- Forward the email to webmanager@incometax.gov.in and incident@cert-in.org.in.
- Include the email’s internet header, if possible, for better tracing.
- Delete the email immediately after reporting.
For phishing scams unrelated to the Income Tax Department, report them to incident@cert-in.org.in.
Fake Lucky Draws Exploiting India Post’s Name
Another prevalent scam involves fake lucky draws claiming to offer free gifts under India Post’s name. These scams aim to steal personal data. India Post has disassociated itself from such schemes.
Stay Safe Online
Authorities emphasize vigilance and caution when dealing with unsolicited communications, particularly those requesting sensitive information. Remember, legitimate organizations like the Income Tax Department or India Post will never ask for personal details such as PINs or passwords via email.
