UK General Elections Results 2024: Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has registered a landslide victory in the historic general election in the UK, defeating Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party, which came in a distant second as millions of voters cast their ballots in a historic general election on Thursday.

UK Election: China says hopes to work with UK ‘on basis of mutual respect’

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the country looks ahead to a stable and mutually beneficial China-UK relationship, as Beijing commented on the victory of the Labour Party. 

“Developing a stable and mutually beneficial China-UK relationship is in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples, and is conducive to both sides responding to global challenges together and promoting world peace and development,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Friday.

“We hope to work with the UK to move China-UK relations forward on the right track on the basis of mutual respect and win-win cooperation,” Mao said at a daily press briefing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Keir Starmer, whose Labour Party marked a landslide victory in the UK election.

UK Election: Rishi Sunak to resign at 3 pm after making statement

Outgoing UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to resign after making a statement in Downing Street at 3 pm (Indian time). Following the statement, he will meet King Charles to formally resign, Sunak’s office said. 

UK Election Result: British stocks, bond prices rise after Labour election win

The pound and British stocks and government bonds rose on Friday after the Labour Party registered a landslide win in the UK. 

According to news agency Reuters, “The bluechip FTSE 100 index rose 0.38 per cent .FTSE at the open, along with midcaps .FTMC 0.4 per cent higher. The yield on 10-year British government bonds or gilts, dropped 3 basis points to 4.17 per cent, largely in line with other European markets.

Sterling was up nearly 0.1 per cent by 0708 GMT against the dollar at $1.2777 and steady against the euro, which was at around 84.75 pence.
