The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and Starscapes, an astro-tourism company, have come together to launch Nakshatra Sabha, an initiative designed to offer a comprehensive Astro Tourism experience.

This project intends to engage participants in a variety of activities, including stargazing, unique solar observations, astrophotography competitions, and camping beneath the stars, in addition to simple stargazing. The organizers intend to develop an interesting platform that unites travelers, astronomy aficionados, and adventurers to take in Uttarakhand’s breathtaking scenery while marveling at the mysteries of space.

Nakshatra Sabha

Uttarakhand is ideally situated to welcome astro travelers from all over the world because of its distinctive blend of a plentiful forest cover, nature-based tourism, convenient access to big cities, and a thriving accommodation industry that includes homestays.

Nakshatra Sabha, which will feature a number of engaging activities at various places throughout Uttarakhand, is scheduled to begin in early June at George Everest in Mussoorie and last through mid-2025. In addition to offering chances for stargazing, these activities will investigate possible locations for night sky in areas such as Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, Nainital, and Chamoli. To augment the educational component of the effort, specialists in the subject will conduct webinars and seminars in addition to these activities.

Nakshatra Sabha plans to support local economies and promote the preservation of night skies while providing astronomy and tourism-related professional training and skill development opportunities for the community’s interested parties. The program intends to establish a policy for the preservation of black skies across the region in the upcoming year, guaranteeing the long-term viability of astrotourism in the area, by cultivating a community of ambassadors committed to dark sky conservation throughout Uttarakhand.

Starscapes will provide training and continuous support for these projects while coordinating with homestay communities, travel and tourism partners, and local communities. Their strong participation will guarantee Nakshatra Sabha’s prosperity and endurance, which will help the local economy and tourists alike.

The term “preservation of night skies” is all about making stars visible again by reducing light pollution around the venue. It involves working to preserve the natural cycles of nocturnal ecosystems as well as the clarity and visibility of stars, planets, and other celestial objects.

Reducing unnecessary artificial light sources, pointing outdoor lighting downward to reduce skyglow, and encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient lighting options are all part of this preservation.

Maintaining the night skies is not only important for our capacity to enjoy the wonders of the universe, but also for the health and behavior of nocturnal creatures, energy conservation, sustainable tourism, and the welfare of mankind.
